#10
TREY PARKER (SOUTH PARK:BIGGER, LONER & UNCUT, 1999)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut movie poster

South Parker creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s reputation as equal opportunity offenders was all but confirmed in South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.

While not busy taking the piss out of Canadian’s, Jewish mothers, and Winona Ryder, Parker & Stone aimed their sights at Satan himself, turning the Prince of Darkness into nothing more than the love lorn bitch of late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, complete with a musical number sure to make every satanist turn into a blubbering mess.

#9
ELIZABETH HURLEY (BEDAZZLED, 2000)
Bedazzled (2000) movie poster

While the classic description for the Devil consists of horns, hooves, and moustache, I’m sure many a bloke will pot for the Elizabeth Hurley model anytime of the week, including Sunday.

Often appearing in skimpy or tight clothing and oozing sex appeal, Hurley’s devil is temptation defined, luring lovelorn doofus Elliot (Brendan Fraser) into a pact made from hell...yet I have a feeling many a man would have brave the fire and brimstone for some time with this naughty little devil.

#8
TOM WAITS (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS, 2009)
Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus movie poster

An oddball devil fitting for an oddball movie, Tom Waits’ Satan  comes off as less the embodiment of evil, and more an eternal trickster, complete with limpish swagger and Waits’ grizzled voice, dutifully drawing the hapless Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) into one impossible bet after another, the poor sod ignorant of the fact that the fix is always in.

#7
MAX VON SYDOW (NEEDFUL THINGS, 1993)
Needful Things movie poster

It was indeed a great irony: the heroic Exorcist playing the deceitful Devil. Yet look past the stunt casting of Max von Sydow as ol’ Nick, and tolerate the TV quality of his Needful Things, and a splendid portrayal of “the evil one” will be found.

Polite, charming, seductive, with a sinister energy bubbling under the surface, Sydow severs all previous ties with the cloth, in one of the great performances found in a bad adaptation of a Stephen King novel.

#6
JACK NICHOLSON (THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK, 1987)
Witches of Eastwick movie poster

Has there ever been a perfect piece of casting? Jack Nicholson has long held a reputation as “your average horny little Devil” before his turn as the great seductor in The Witches of Eastwick.

And really, who else could imagine anyone but Nicholson filing the sexual desires of Cher, Susan Sarandon,  and Michelle Pfeiffer all in one film?

#5
TIM CURRY (LEGEND, 1985)
Legend movie poster

Out of the Top 10, Tim Curry’s “Darkness” fits the prototype of what the Devil is supposed to look like: horns, hooves, and a tan sure to shame any solarium junkie.

Making it work is Curry’s performance, transmitting evil vibes from under the layers of makeup, which took hours to apply.

#4
ROSALINDA CELENTANO (THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, 2004)
Passion of the Christ movie poster

The casting of Italian model Rosalinda Celentano as Satan in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ was both an innovative and ballsy move.

Androgynous in look, pale in complexion, and deceitfully sympathetic in demeanour, this devil’s sole purpose is to lure Jesus from his destiny as the saviour of mankind, offering a way out from the savagery he must endure.

#3
ROBERT DE NIRO (ANGEL HEART, 1987)
Angel Heart movie poster

Although playing a supporting role, Robert De Niro’s turn as the mephisto-esque Louis Cyphre remains the focal point of the highly controversial supernatural thriller, Angel Heart.

Every scene in which De Niro appears is filled with an unshakeable dread, which not only spooks its audience but also scares the bejeezus out of leading man Mickey Rourke’s gumshoe, hired by Cyphre to track down a debt owed to him.

#2
AL PACINO (THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, 1997)
The Devil's Advocate movie poster

The Devil’s Advocate is one of those films in which its star performance (note: its note the first billed Keanu Reeves) transcends its, albeit deftly written, material.

In his turn as Satan, aka law firm boss John Milton, thesp Al Pacino uses his hoo-ha bravado and infectious charm to create an astonishingly entertaining portrayal of the king of the bad guys, wooing Reeves’ hot shot attorney with fame and riches, while planting the seeds for the beginning of the end times.

#1
VIGGO MORTENSON (THE PROPHECY, 1995)
The Prophecy movie poster

It is a rare thing to outdo an in form Christopher Walken, yet Viggo Mortenson almost did just that in his brief yet memorable appearance as Lucifer in the supernatural thriller, The Prophecy.

Draped in black and nestled in the shadows, Mortenson’s Lucifer is a truly chilling creation, munching on peddle less flowers and teasing that it was indeed he who was under the childhood bed of former priest turned cop Tommy (Elias Kosteas), as he patiently waits to make his move as a war erupts between rebellious angels and God.
