HUGO CABRET

The Invention of Hugo Cabret poster

STARRING
ASA BUTTERFIELD, SACHA BARON COHEN, BEN KINGSLEY, JUDE LAW, CHLOE MORETZ

RELEASE DATE
NOVEMBER 2011

Always willing to try new things, Scorsese will venture into the world of 3D with his adaptation of Brian Selznick's childrens book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which centres on a 12 year old orphan who lives in the walls of a Paris train station in 1930.

Asa Butterfield will play the title character, with the female lead role of Isabelle going to Chloe Moretz.

The film also features an all star supporting cast that features the likes of Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, and Ray Winstone, yet it will be Scorsese’s handle of 3D that will draw punters.

Will Scorsese finally make live action 3D credible, all will the much maligned formal swallow him whole?

LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD: GEORGE HARRSION

George Harrison

STARRING
GEORGE HARRISON

RELEASE DATE
2011

Scorsese’s love for movies is nearly matched by his love for music, particularly rock ‘n’ roll as his Bob Dylan documentary and The Band / Rolling Stones concert films attest.

Next is his ode to the quite Beatle, George Harrison in Living in the Material World, a BBC funded documentary will follow Harrison's story from his early life in Liverpool, his life as a member of The Beatles, his the influence of Indian culture on his music.

Scorsese will use footage from Harrison’s own video archives, no doubt making for an engrossing and deeply personal documentary.

SILENCE

Silence book

STARRING
DANIEL DAY LEWIS, BENICIO DEL TORO, GAEL GARCIA BERNAL (RUMOURED)

RELEASE DATE
2012

It has been a while since Scorsese touched base with his Catholic faith, and Silence promises to be a reflective exploration into evangelisation, persecution, and worship.

The film will focus on a pair of Jesuit priests from Portuegel, who travel to Japan in search of their mentor, only to find the church has been driven underground and Christians are being persecuted sometimes to the point of death.

Rumoured to take part are Daniel Day Lewis, Benicio Del Toro, and Gael Garcia Bernal, and if the film comes close to receiving the acclaim that the book it was based on received (written by Shusaku Endo), then Silence would make a lot of noise during awards season.

THE IRISHMAN

I Heard You Paint House book

STARRING
ROBERT DE NIRO, AL PACINO, JOE PESCI, HARVEY KEITEL

RELEASE DATE
2012

When Robert De Niro announced that he, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci will join forces on The Irishman, and that Martin Scorsese will direct, a collective cheer roared from crime movie fans worldwide.

Based on the novel “I Heard You Paint Houses” written by Charles Brandt, the film will see De Niro’s long reunion with Scorsese in his portrayal of mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who above all things claims to have killed Jimmy Hoffa.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect is that the film will mark the first collaboration between Scorsese and Al Pacino, who although together in the biz for over 40 years, will finally work together.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

The Wolf of Wall Street poster

STARRING
LEONARDO DICAPRIO

RELEASE DATE
2013

In what would be their 5th collaboration, Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to bring popular memoir The Wolf of Wall Street to the big screen, with Di Caprio playing former Wall Street hot shot Jordan Belfor, who led a debauched life and eventually did jail time for manipulating the stock market for his own gain.

No further developments have been revealed, but for those not impressed with Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel, then this film could be what they’re after.

SINATRA

Frank Sinatra

STARRING
AL PACINO, ROBERT DE NIRO (RUMOURED)

RELEASE DATE
2013

A biopic on Frank Sinatra always seemed ripe for Scorsese’s touch, so when it was announced that Scorsese will in fact direct Sinatra, fans of both great men rejoiced.

Sinatra won’t be the commercial “He came, he conquered, he left” music biopics of yore, and will instead focus on the infamous crooners alleged relationship with the mob, effectively tying together Scorsese’s two best cinematic subjects: music & gangsters.

No word on casting, yet Scorsese has made it clear that he wants none other than Al Pacino as Sinatra, and Robert De Niro as Dean Martin.

Please, God, make it so.
