Cinema history has proven that there is a fine line between portraying and impersonating historical figures, with the latter all too easy a trap to fall into.
Meryl Streep’s outstanding turn as polarising British Prime Minister Margret Thatcher in The Iron Lady avoids such trappings. Sure, Streep uncannily replicated the unique tones and look (with the help of a fine make-up team) that makes Thatcher such a unique person, yet it is Streep’s tapping into the heart and passion of Thatcher’s worldview that makes this such a fine performance.
Whether playing the part of the screeching member of parliament, the authoritative leader of Britain, or the fragile elderly lady dealing with dementia, Streep hits all facets to make this turn one of her best in an impressive career.
